A little over 10 years ago I (Koen Crommentuijn) started to make a cupboard from biobased materials. I felt I really had to make this cabinet for a nursery, because of my feelings about toxic outflow of, among other things, Formaldehyde from plywood & sheet material. I thought that children were our future, so I wanted a product with minimal emissions. I was looking for a biobased sheet material and then came across Ecoboard – a sheet made of straw, an alternative to MDF and finished with Auro, then one of the few eco paints on the market from Germany. I thought the result was great. Well, I had it made after all, It was a super finished, completely Biobased cupboard, with no screws and all parts glued togetherwith bioresin glue …. however I’m no salesman or producer, but just a creative mind ….so the idea stayed in the cupboard.

Fast forward over 10 years later to Studio STRRR,  the design company I set up with my fellow creative mind Carl Mills. We are now firmly entrenched in the leisure sector developing family concepts for hotels and will soon enter the school sector…that Biobased Circular spark started glowing inside me again and we now intend to market Biobased Circular children’s furniture & play objects.

However, unlike 10 years ago, we now have the know how, suppliers, customers and a network which really believes in our mission. So yes my dream of going biobased will become reality soon. Idea and concept development is in full swing…We will keep you all posted!

Would you like to climb to your Hotel room? When you are visiting a family hotel in the City Center, it would be awesome to check in and bouldering your way to your room or suite…together with your family or friends perhaps. A climbing wall positioned by the check-in desk directly in the lobby. This could be the next thing in combining leisure with pleasure. Be active, playful and have a healthy lifestyle all the way…

Sometimes less desk is more service!

The 21st century guest is used to experiencing digital self- service wherever they go.  At airports, train stations, movie theatres and even at fast food restaurants. One area where this has not yet happened is in hotels.

When guests enter a lobby they are usually faced with an enormous front desk where they have to stand in line to check in and wait for their credit card to be checked before they receive the key to their room.

For some guests this can be a daunting and tiring process. Especially after a long days travelling, with an energetic and impatient 5 year old in tow. Sometimes you just want to walk in, get face to face friendly service and get to your room for that refreshing shower as quickly as possible, without having to listen to the complaints of other guests waiting in line before you.

So why not streamline this process. Shorten the waiting time and give your guests a warmer welcome? How? By ditching the desk and implementing new technology to automate the check in.

By Removing the physical barrier between host and guest, you have the opportunity to create a more personal, human touch. Welcome your guests as if into your home, into a living room type atmosphere with cosy check in lounges where guests have the freedom to check in themselves, but can also ask a personal check in assistant for help if required. One who actually makes eye contact with you and smiles instead of staring at his computer screen while he checks your details.

First impressions are everything. So why not design the perfect environment to warmly welcome your guests in your lobby and use technology to speed up the check in process. This way you can also turn your reception area into a multi functional area that is 100% in line with your overall hotel concept.

So if you’re ready to give your guests the 21st century welcome they deserve and desire, ditch the desk! Replace it with a homely welcome area. Add a little fun and a large dose of technology and be amazed at what you can achieve.

Check in in a playful way; get the 50 boxing points and free your key from the tree…

Reviews on St.Regis Vommuli Resort, Maldives, Starwood Hotels

  • “The staff at the kids club were also tremendous. They had great activities for the kids, mixing quiet time of arts and crafts with active time running around playing indoor soccer and going out on the playground. In terms of food we would recommend the Kids Pass for your children’s meal options, which at $30/day for lunch and dinner is a great way to avoid having to buy them a $50 entre they may not eat.
We spent Christmas at the resort, and this again showed how they spared no expense. The kids club organized a Christmas tree lighting party with carols and snacks. Kids went around the island caroling. Christmas morning Santa arrived on a Jet Ski bearing personalized gifts for each of the children, while parents were treated to champagne.”
  • “Mummy, can I go to the Kid’s Club please?” That’s my 6 year old son’s favorite place to check out everyday at Stregis Maldives. He had lots of fun playing with the other kids he met there and also participating in the fun-filled and educational activities which were properly planned on a daily basis. He was very reluctant to leave the beautiful resort cause he said he will miss the kids club very much.- Thanks to Eeklin, Tripadvisor Contributor from Malaysia
